Nexon range/mileage figures

Tips to increase mileage/range

There are so many requests for Mileage, so we at TNOC spoke with various owners and came up with mileage figures across most common driving scenarios. The mileage figures will help you decide your variant. There is a chance of increase or decrease in mileage depending upon one's driving pattern.

Note:

  • All mileage figures reported here are with AC 100% of the time.

  • Modes do not change the fuel economy substantially. It's hardly a km plus or minus

  • All mileage figures are with light to medium foot. Heavy foot will reduce the mileage by another 2 kmpl.

We have come up with tips on better driving and to increase mileage/range on Nexon. Following these simple steps will go a long way in making you a better driver and increasing your mileage.

While Driving:

  1. Use accelerator lightly. Don't floor the accelerator. High rate of acceleration will decrease mileage.

  2. Keep windows closed while driving. Open windows increase drag, thereby reducing fuel economy. consider drag as additional weight in simple terms.

  3. Use AC in "Auto" mode if you have climate control.

  4. Shift gears at the optimum RPM & Speed. Don't rev high in each gear. The optimum range is 2000-2200 rpm to change gears.

  5. Follow principle of coasting and do not brake abruptly. Coasting saves fuel.

  6. Don't let the car idle at signals & at traffic jams. Turn off the car and start again as needed. This saves fuel.

  7. Use engine braking to slow vehicle down instead of harsh braking

  8. It might be a good idea to use sports mode while on highway. It is a myth that sports mode consumes more fuel.

  9. Drive at an optimal speed considering traffic density. Too much acceleration and subsequent braking leads to increased fuel consumption.

  10. Do not park your car under hot sun as far as possible. The AC compressor would need to work harder to cool the cabin, thereby eating into mileage.

Planning your drive:

  1. Combine multiple trips into one single trip wherever possible.

  2. Remove unwanted items from the car, as it adds unnecessary weight. More weight = more fuel consumed = lesser mileage.

  3. Look at google maps before starting, even if it is your everyday route or even if you are very very familiar with the route. If the road is blocked or there is some unprecedented traffic snarl, opt for an alternate route to reach your destination.

  4. Try to avoid traffic bottle necks due to peak hours. Start before traffic hits. Example, try to cross Sriperumbudur toll by 7:00 am, as the road is filled with buses headed to SIPCOT & other colleges.

  5. Plan out rest/breakfast stops well ahead as you wouldn't need to waste time scouting and/or hunting for a good eatery.

  6. Take proper highways and access controlled roads as far as possible. Non-toll roads might be shorter distance wise, but we might end up spending more fuel and time.

  7. Plan to by-pass major cities if you are heading to another destination. Example, if you are headed to Madikeri, Coorg, by-pass Bangalore and Mysore. There is no need to enter Bangalore or Mysore and waste fuel in traffic. Similarly, If you want to drive on ECR, there is no need to travel on OMR and pay additional toll. Thiruvanmiyur - ECR is good enough.

Car Maintenance tips (From mileage perspective)

  1. Maintain optimum tyre pressure. For Nexon, we recommend 30-32 PSI of Nitrogen in all five tyres. Ensure proper rotation and balancing every 5000kms or 6 months, whichever is earlier.

  2. Purchase fuel from COCO pumps as far as possible. Adulterated fuel reduces mileage

  3. Service the car at manufacturer recommended intervals. This keeps engine, air filter and oil filter in good health and engine runs optimally. Clogged filters, sludgy oil add to incomplete combustion, causing more fuel consumption.

EV Specific Tips:

  1. Try to coast as much as you can. Coasting regenerates energy and increases range.

  2. Avoid sudden bursts of throttle. Gentle accelerator usage is suggested.

  3. Drive at a steady speed between 60-80 kmph for best range.

  4. Avoid parking your car in hot sun. AC would need to work harder to cool your cabin, resulting in lesser range.

  5. Try to stop at outlets which offer you a charging facility.

  6. Charge in short bursts rather than in a single shot, to increase battery life.

  7. Identify charging points en-route. to your destination. You might also want to check facilities of competitors. If you own a Nexon EV, try to see even an MG or Hyundai network and check with the local dealer on whether they will allow to charge your Nexon EV, for a fee. A member has charged his Nexon EV at an MG dealership at Vellore.

  8. Avoid roof carriers, cycle racks and other paraphernalia on the EV. It reduces range. It is even fine in an ICE vehicle, as we can buy more fuel en-route, but in EV its cumbersome.

  9. Avoid unnecessary additional electrical accessories, which would tend to eat up power, thereby reducing range.

  10. Even though you have a list of charging stations on the way, ensure to give them a call and check whether the facility is operational. Remember to ask them how many chargers they have and most importantly, ensure they are covered.

Nexon Specific tips

  1. Drive in sports mode on highway. It tends to increase mileage (reported by many users)

  2. Clean your DPF filter regularly (in BS6 diesel models). If usage is not much, get it cleaned at a.s.s.

  3. Do not install roof rack or rooftop cycle carrier. Aerodynamics and load will impact mileage.

  4. Avoid roof lights, which reduce aerodynamics.
